Indy MotoGP Roadtrip
This past weekend was spent in Indianpolis for the MotoGP race. It was a great time as seven of us made the road trip down, with my dad, brother Bob (Watson) and a few other buddies all riding down, while Gina and I drove Bob's truck as the "support vehicle". It was a great time all weekend – even with the rain and hurricane IKE-like wind and rain on Sunday.
The weekend itself was perfect. Nice and relaxing. No planning, no having to get up early to get to the track. We all hung out together and really had a good time. Friday night we spent downtown and hit some bars. Downtown Indy is such a cool city and it was packed with people and with bikes. Throughout the weekend we crossed paths with Doug and Marion, along with Darren (Womack) and Jim (Cottrell) which was a good time.
Saturday had great weather and we went to the Indy Mile flat track race, which was phenomenal. Awesome racing. Watching those guys throw the bike into the turns without any front brakes is incredible. The racing is tight and it's great action. It's hard for me to see how that aspect of motorcycle racing hasn't been promoted nearly as well as it should be. It's flat out great racing. It's making me want to get an XR-100 again so I can play around in the dirt over the fall/winter like my dad and I did years back.
Sunday's weather was windy and rainy, but we all had ponchos and rain coats ready, so walking around in the rain with a beer in-hand was the least of our worries. The race itself was a wet one, but still exciting and great to watch the top talent in the world go at it. The sound of the bikes alone is worth going to see a MotoGP race in person. They're like nothing else – especially the Ducatis.
The group of 7-8 we had was perfect and worked out great. For a change, I liked not having to be busy moving around, doing stuff, talking to people, making sure we did this or did that. It was just a good old time of enjoying ourselves and the racing – and we all did that.
Cheers,
- eddie

What a great weekend, I will second everything said above as well! The ride down in the rain was much better then could be expected and in some ways, might even be considered enjoyable??? Yea, I just said that…as odd as it sounds. I suppose when you’re riding down with such a fine group and know that the inaugural running of the MotoGP @ Indy is ahead of you, anything on the way becomes that much sweeter.
I also can’t discount a group ride, much less four days, with one Mr. Dennis Breezmeister (seen in above photo on the far right) – One of the greatest story tellers of my time and the best part is; others can confirm that these tales are actually true. It didn’t matter where we were or what time it was, if Dennis was there then entertainment was provided.
Those of you that know Bob are already aware of what’s in store or how much more you might end up drinking that day/night, especially in a setting like Indy! Between Bob and I, there was never a glass left empty. :-) Our last two riders, Joe and Chuck, put the BMW presence at the top of our five rider group. Chuck being great friends with Bob and Joe adds just one more piece of entertainment while riding bikes, drinking beer and enjoying racing. Joe, the crew chief and mastermind that he is was our acting GPS system – a.k.a. “Joe-Quest†or “Joe-PSâ€. Often leading the pack and keeping us on track throughout the trip.
Now the most memorable part of the weekend had to be our Sunday morning commute to the track. As the weather was not in our favor and the last couple days had left us at idle speeds of overheating bikes, we decided to leave those at the hotel and hop in Bob’s truck. However, there was just one thing…Bob’s truck really only seats five and we had eight. That meant there was only one logical and rationale thing to do…put the other three in the bed of the Tundra of course! Since it was raining, the three admirable volunteers (who surprisingly took no actual convincing) proceeded to lie down in the bed with the cover still on no less. I should note that this cover was easily removable and offered to be removed on multiple occasions before departing, however the three passengers refused? (They shall remain nameless) Well, as you can imagine, this made the drive down there the perfect start to a great day!
Lastly, we can’t forget Eddie’s umbrella girl and the lady that really holds everything together on race weekends – Mrs. Gina Kraft. Gina had a good time, actually a great time on Friday night in downtown Indy, which hosted a gathering of all her favorite friends: Miller, red bull and Sky, etc…I think there might have been an incident at the local pub during the late hours of the night, but no actual evidence or statements have been found or heard to confirm? ïŠ G – You get top recognition for dealing with all seven of us and always hanging out late.
Until next year,
mk
Great recap. Especially the part of cramming everyone into the truck and driving by literally 12+ cop cars on the way there. None of them noticed or cared the three pairs of legs sticking out the back of the truck!
Good times for sure ..
