Quote of the Day
Another quote from Valentino Rossi's book, What If I Had Never Tried It:
"Back in 2000 we had in fact committed a huge mistake. We did not believe in our chances at the start of the season. We thought the title was going to be out of reach. It was my first season in 500cc and it was the first year we worked together. I was twenty-one years old. We began assuming that it was just going to be impossible to win the title in our debut season, and, by the end, we regretted having felt that way. Because, even though we did not try that hard, Kenny Roberts, the world champion, was not that far ahead of us.
By the end he did have a certain lead, but I had not raced to win, I had raced to gain experience. I didn't plan on trying to win the title. And analysing my performances and those of the competition, we both later agreed that we could have won straight away."
This is in regards to a conversation between Rossi and Jeremy Burgess (Rossi's Crew Chief), and the wrong mentality they had in their first year of 500cc racing together. Burgess reminded Rossi of this at the first Yamaha test at Sepang, where Rossi didn't think the Yamaha would be competitive out of the gate against the factory Honda's – the team he had been a part of the year prior.
Needless to say, they didn't make the same mistake twice, with Rossi winning his first race aboard the Yamaha, and later winning the title.
