Season Kick-Off a Success
Sunday's season kick-off at Kart 2 Kart went well. Minus a few no-shows (*cough* Justin *cough*), we had a good turnout and a real good time. Double bonus for the day as the Spartans beat Louisville and are in the Final Four. We had the bikes on display and a good assortment of food on hand.
For the karts, qualifying was intense with many treating it like a race. Doug was especially focused, as were George (Black), Danny (Butler) and Darren (Womack). My dad and J.B. were sporting matching helmets, but I don't think there were any team orders in place. While it had been awhile since being in a kart, I finished 2nd on the timesheets behind J.B., after he Rowdy Burn'd it and put me into the wall part way through the session. Bastard.
I exercised some revenge later, winning the race after our qualifying spots determined the grid for the race. I got some help from Danny who was behind me on the outside starting fourth, while Darren was starting on the inside in third. Danny was trying to tell me something before the race; waving his hands around and pointing to turns – none of which I understood. As the flag dropped, Darren being Darren, he dive bombed into the first turn throwing me wide. Side by side into the next turn, Darren had the drive, but now the outside line heading into this left-hander. Danny ran directly into the back of me, which pushed me up alongside Darren, where I now had the line and could take back 2nd place and chase after J.B. Ah, that's what Danny was talking about .. thanks man! And off I went to chase down J.B.
Lap after lap, I closed on him like a pack of wolves. He'd look back every lap to see where I was; as if he thought I'd fall back. I could tell he was feeling the pressure (probably not) as I hounded him relentlessly for 4-6 laps before he broke under it and ran wide, opening the door where I passed and elected to not return the favor of acclimating him to the tire wall. You're welcome J.B. :)
The third race was a mess, but a riot. All you need to know is that an inverted grid equals trouble. The first few laps had several different spinouts with contact and carnage everywhere. Lap times had to be 3-5 seconds off the pace those first few laps. I finished 3rd behind Womack and Butler and was a bit too polite during the race. It's hard to knock your brother-in-law out of the way though when he's not used to the racer mentality. Unfortunately, no one else felt the same, as he took a pounding in that race, getting bumped and tossed around, but he took it like a champ. Good times, good times.
Gina even got in on the action, doing a session out on the track, but she's got to work on her lines to bring those times down. Our cousin Emily – she drove straight into the wall at full speed on her first lap. None of us had ever seen anything like it. I think she was waiving to the camera. I'm never driving in a car with her again.
Thanks to Kart 2 Kart for letting us put this event on, and thank you to everyone who came out. Hopefully we can do it again next year ..

Ed/Gina, Sorry I missed your kickoff. But as you know I was a little busy. Good luck this season. I hope to make Mid-Ohio this year.
See ya.
I’d say anything tied with marriage is a valid exception Eric .. :)
