The Nelson / Bluegrass Swap
Rather than heading to the brand new, highly anticipated Bluegrass Motorsports Park this weekend for our next round on the WERA calendar, we are instead heading back to Nelson Ledges for our second visit of the season. Not all bad, but the replacement of a brand new track for um … Nelson Ledges wasn't exactly exciting news at the time, but I'm ready to go back and find some lost time after our first visit.
As for Bluegrass, it was supposed to be ready, but due to construction delays it's not yet rideable and WERA was forced to (hopefully temporarily) remove it from the schedule. It's supposed to be ready come July, but who knows for sure at this point. One thing is for certain – it looks to be a great track and isn't much further than BeaveRun, and it's closer than Putnam Park. From pictures and some video so far, the track looks plenty wide and fast, with plenty of elevation changes and a straight away longer than Grattan's. It could potentially be one of the nicest tracks in the area.
But back to the important bits. Nelson is now this weekend. We did decent there last time. We were able to get into the mid 1:08's, which is about equal to my fastest time there. However this time around, we'll be starting closer to the front in all our races which is good. The bike will also be better this time around. After WERA at Grattan and STT at BeaveRun, I'm pretty sure we fixed the issue of the bike squatting and running wide out of corners. This means I can get on the gas sooner and more aggressively. At Nelson Ledges this is crucial, as it's such a fast track. The average speed around this track is one of the highest in the country last I was told – so keeping the throttle open is tops on the list of importance.
My dad and I are headed down there on Thursday, with Doug and Marion arriving sometime on Friday or Saturday. Aaron will also be coming down, which will be a big help and make for a good time. Gina and Maggie won't be making this one so it'll be up to Marion to keep the guys in line .. a tall task indeed.
Cheers,
-ek
