The Witchkraft Files – WERA Round 5, Grattan National
By Doug Cornett:
Are we there yet? The WERA National circus rolled into Grattan last weekend. All the North Central locals came to compete and spend their hard earned money playing against the Pros. Witchkraft Racing is just a small operation compared to the big rigs in the paddock. It would seem that spending cubic dollars is an indication of success on the track… yup, that is a true-ism. When Vesrah and TVR and Robert Jensen and Taylor Knapp show up you can bet on the outcome.
Marion and I rolled in on Sunday morning on our way home after our two week epic road trip from Oregon to Michigan. As always, Joe and Eddie were set up and looking good. I'm starting to feel guilty not being involved doing the hard part this weekend. I'll make up for it, I promise.
I was informed that Carney Racing pulled off a fantastic podium finish in third riding their trusty, old, patched together R6 in the Middleweight Supersport class during the Saturday 6 hour Endurance Race. Can you believe those guys? They do a track day a week before the race to see if they remember which way the track goes…they recruit a ringer to add to their street cred… try to remember which direction the wheels rotate so they can mount them up after buying their annual set of tires! All the while having a blast working together to make this happen. I'm sure they did everything they needed to do during the race like consistent lap times, lightning quick pit stops, riding smart when the traffic gets bunched up in the tight, off camber turns of Grattan. All of that is the beauty and the curse of endurance racing…being smart will prevail over big bucks more often than not. Carney Racing stepped it up a big time on Saturday. I'm kinda sorry I missed it.
Again, Aaron was on hand to do everything for the the team that needed to be done. Without a doubt, he is priceless. So I roll in like some sort of B list celeb, pressed team shirt and all, looking for something to do. The garage is spotless, the sponsor banners were hung with pride, the bike is prepped and ready, Joe is deep in thought and Eddie is no where to be found. I'm so glad nothing changes with this team.
I've realized now that I come to races with the Witchkraft Team not having any expectations, only hopes. I do not expect anything (other than I will be tired Monday morning) but I hope that Eddie will have a good set of practices and even better races. But I do come to the races knowing some things. I know Witchkraft Racing will watch for details and things not just right. I know that we always keep our focus on making sure Eddie goes out with the best bike we can put together. And I know we will have a good time no matter what happens…well, barring anything we are not prepared for. I've come to know something else, that Eddie will improve. I'm not saying that as a command or as direction to him. Eddie does that to himself. I know that he will concentrate, think long and hard, ask questions of knowledgeable people and other racers, diligently workout to keep himself in top condition, promote his racing to better showcase the team, research ideas until he incorporates the best information into his racing so he will improve.
No, we are not there yet. I hope there is more to come …Friday, July 17th, 2009 | POSTED AT: 6:33 AM
