The Witchkraft Files – WERA Round 7, Grattan Raceway
By Doug Cornett:
I missed the WERA Cycle Jam at VIR … I really missed it. I've been to that track before, even done some laps around it, very nice facility and from the sounds of it… it has gotten better. I really missed not being there. So I was pumped to be heading to Grattan this past weekend to hang with Eddie, Joe, Tom, Aaron and Eric Johnston. It was great to see Eric again. It has been too long. He was a great help this weekend with stands and tire warmers and his insightful, quick wit that kept us laughing. Aaron was helping Jonas McClusky this weekend so we didn't have his knowledgable hands and strong back at our beck and call as has been the case much of this season. So I got to be the "step and fetch" crew for Eddie, Joe (who was racing AGAIN!) and Tom. I loved it.
I've got to admit… I'm not paying close attention to all the results. I hope I remember everyones finishes but I probably get at least one race result wrong by a place or two. Eddie had some strong competition from Shaun Conrad and the ususal WERA fast guys this weekend. So as it turned out Conrad has a good weekend and so did we. One particular race Eddie checked out early and never looked back. It was such a commanding win… I was so happy for him. Normally Eddie is very reserved when he comes back to the pit after a good race or a win. But this time he was pumped. He rolled in… as he stopped and I grabbed the bike, he yelled to me "now that's what I'm talkin' about" and I yelled back at him "now that's what I'm talking about". I like to think it was a moment for brothers in arms – Eddie doing all the work and me basking in all the glory. Well, not so much brothers… how about master and servant… how about… naw, just kidding. Like I said, I was really happy for him. Excellent result.
Joe was his usual steady self. No muss, no fuss. He always brings his A game to the track even though he has not raced a full season so far. This weekend was his second time on the track. I swear, he doesn't loose much to the rest of the guys gridded up that have been racing all season. Everyone looses something when they don't race consistantly and I suspect Joe does too but I can't see it. Joe put in some strong effort and got solid results. He was able to ride around a rare bike issue that would have had someone else crashing or giving up and pulling in. Joe figured it out and rode around the problem, stayed out and finished the race. Steely eyed rider we have here. I know he is riding hard because he is wearing out tires when SV's are supposed to be gentle on tires and they are supposed to last all season. HA!
Tom has been getting used to his monster 1098 Ducati this season. Yesterday he really put his head down in one of his races and pulled out a well deserved 2nd place. He had a good start but was passed and put back into 3rd early on. After a lap of sizing this rider up, he passed back and tried to gap them. It worked for a lap or two and then they battled for the rest of the race. Tom would keep the other rider behind him at the line for a great race. This was definately a breakout race for Tom. He raised his racing to the next level with the effort he put into that race. I think he was pretty happy too as he was all smiles for the rest of the day. That's how we can get away with calling him "Muffin". Outstanding result.
Oh yeah… Saturday night at the hotel bar… we laughed and laughed. Jeff Wrobel, Rob Hancock, Jeff Agnes, Frenchie, Tom, Eddie, Joe, Eric and I added to the noise level, well maybe we were the noise level. Some of the stories, the jib jab and crap that was tossed around the table was all in good fun and we all might of had too much… well I did. Eric and Joe were making me drink Scotch… that is the last time I do that. Although, I didn't have a hangover the next morning! Bonus.
Great weekend. I had too much fun. Later.Monday, August 24th, 2009 | POSTED AT: 5:45 AM
