The Witchkraft Files ‘10 – WERA Round 1, Nelson Ledges
By Doug Cornett:
The View is Great
First Round, WERA North Central at Nelson Ledges. There are equal parts to the equation this weekend – Eddie has a plan to go fast at a track he feels comfortable on and Witchkraft Racing had a growth spurt over the winter.
This writer would like a "shout out" for/to/at Honda East Toledo and our resident Ducati Racer, Tom Beagle. Without Tom's help, business knowledge and over all savy in such matters along with the generosity of Honda East – our racing effort would not be the same as it is today. As we say here in the colonies, "Thanks a million bro".
As junior wrench on the team I took it upon myself to help our new team mate out this weekend. Jeff Wrobel, in my humble opinion is the quintisential racer. He scratched together his operation out of shear energy along with boundless enthuiasm for motorcycle racing and close competition. I really like the fact he is a sportsman first and in equal measure a true gentleman to everyone around him. Eddie did good selecting Jeff to join the team.
Saturday started out cold so we paused and while we were at it we did a bit of suspension twiddling. Jeff and I took a look at the bike, scratched our heads and decided to give it a go as it sat. The idea was to get some communication started so we understand each other and then adjust the bike accordingly. We tried various things and Jeff responded by feeling better on the bike with every change. He was getting comfortable on the new bike and suspension. As Jeff got warmed up and into the groove, we went around with our tweeks and came back to the suspension setting we started with. You should have seen the look on his face when I told him that.
Based on the tires and how Jeff likes to ride, we agreed on new settings and gave it a go on Sunday for the sprints. More improvement and comfort each race as we fine tuned the suspension. We made progress all weekend. Laps times dropped, tire wear was within pramaters and no one on the team touched handlebars to the ground. That made the beerz taste that much better.
One of the high lights for me this weekend – Eddie and Jeff finishing 1st and 2nd in one of their races. I still get a thrill remembering them ride up to our pit together and everyone around cheering and applauding them. Makes all the long hours and late nights this past winter worth it.
Oh yeah, don't shake hands with Jeff at the end of the weekend – it is some sort of sadistic ritual of his to see who's hand he can crush the worst. I'm wearing hiking boots next time so I can kick him in the shins.
Over and out,Doug
