Motul Oil – Part 2
Another bit of info from Garrett Andrews, over at Motul. A worthwhile read with some good technical data, specifically the clutch test. A more-detailed technical data sheet is available as well below.
Motul vs. The Competition:
Motul uses the best base stocks and additives for the most protection of your engine. Many other brands use much cheaper base stocks and additives which can be reflected in the price, tyipically $1.00 or more less as expensive. Using less expensive ingredients can lead to less film protection, more shear (break down) and the inability to handle higher temperatures.
Motul uses ESTER in all their products with the exception of our 3000 (Mineral oil). Ester is a bi-product of fatty acids and alcohol. The fatty acids coming from vegetible derivities. When ESTER is used in oil, it can be up to 5 times stronger in film strength over petroleum oils which many other brands are. ESTER is polar meaning it sticks to metal parts just like a refrigerator magnet. So for cold start up's you already have protection at the top of the head before the oil gets pumped to the top. Also modified engines that create a lot of pressure and heat will see much better wear protection from the no metal to metal contact.
All of Motul's products are JASO-MA rated with the exception of 300V which is branded as a racing oil. You'll notice a MA box on the back of all our products with the registration # from JASO. The main text from JASO is their T-903 test which is the wet clutch test. JASO will suspend a simulated wet clutch pack in our product and rotate it at high speed, then put it under load. The clutch can only slip a maximum of 1 1/2 inches. They do this test 100 times. Then with the same clutch pack they put it under a load at a stand-still and torque the clutch – and again it can only slip a maximum of 1 1/2 inches. They also do this test 100 times. So after the 200 cycles of these tests, they qualify you as passing and give you your registraion #. None of Repsol's products for example have this and most manufacturers ask for a JASO-MA rated oil.
