John Hopkins in Cycle World / X Games

The latest issue of Cycle World arrived over the weekend and in the first few pages there's an interview with John Hopkins who has undergone some major wrist issues in the past. In it he talks about Dr. Chao as the surgeon who saved his wrist and his racing career. Here's one quick blurb from the article:

"Five out of six doctors, all very highly respected surgeons, deemed my wrist unfixable, that it would have to be fused. Basically, I was left to retire at 26 years old. That's when I found Dr. James Chao in San Diego. He said he could fix it, that it was going to be a massive surgery – a complete reconstruction using a lot of modern technology – but I would have movement in my wrist. He saved my career."

Upon my initial visit to see Dr. Chao, he said something similar to that in being able to fix the wrist, but we've been waiting on a bone donor for quite some time now. Along with the article, I was watching the X Games this past weekend and saw Dr. James' brother, David Chao (both of whom I saw when we traveled to San Diego originally, to find out we'd be doing a bone-transplant surgery on my wrist) who was tending to the BMX guys banging themselves up during the Big Air event. He's been the lead doctor for the X Games for the past couple years.

I'm hoping these two latest signs might mean the surgery will be happening soon. While I am certainly enjoying racing this year – even in being limited compared to where I was before the injury, I'd really like to get this thing taken care of properly – ideally, after the last event of the season, but I'd take anytime sooner over later. :)
