MotoSeries Weekend at Nelson Ledges
We headed to Nelson Ledges this past weekend to turn some laps with MotoSeries. Todd over there runs a really strong event and draws some great turnouts at his races. Joe, Nick (aka Phil, from STG) and I made the drive down to turn some laps and have some fun. MotoSeries runs a weekend event without Friday practice generally, so it makes for a less-expensive and more compact weekend which was a nice change.
Saturday was a practice day and it rained on and off all day. This was Nick's first time to the track, so he didn't get to turn a lot of laps – maybe ten total. I turned four and dad zero. Ah well, we hung out and enjoyed just taking it easy. It was cool to see a lot of familiar faces, as it had been a couple years since we had been to an event here. The relaxed atmosphere again was a nice change.
Dad ended up needing an ECU for his bike to run (he thought he had it fixed after the issues at Grattan) with those electrical gremlins he has been having. Bill Bullock (one of the guys pitted across from us, on an SV as well) had one at home and was nice enough to drive with my dad to his place and sneak the ECU out of the bike for him to use. Pretty cool, especially considering they were racing against each other that weekend. Good stuff.
Sunday's weather was great. Early morning practice and some morning races before lunch, with more races in the afternoon. Nick did well dropping time and getting comfy around the bumpy Nelson track. Joe did extremely well, finishing 3rd and 5th in both his races on the SV. There were over 20 lightweight bikes in his races, which was crazy. We haven't seen that many lightweight bikes since the GLRRA days! He led a good chunk of the first race, battling with a few guys and eventually coming out in 3rd. The 5th place finish was a great race as Joe stalled the bike on the grid and rolled through T1 in last place. He fought through the field and just needed a few more laps. Overall, the lightweight turnout was impressive.
For me it was nice to run around and turn some laps. Jeff (Agnes) and John (Peters) were there on 1000's, so we raced together most of the day. Lap times weren't anything to brag about, but we took home some trophies which is always nice. And as an added bonus, I ran on takeoffs in all the races – a welcome sight to the wallet. :) As an added bonus, the races wrapped up by 3:00 so we got home while it was still light out.
Overall, good weekend and a good refresher at Nelson before we head there with WERA in a few weeks. Thanks again to Todd for running a great show as well.
Cheers.
