A 3-Cylinder R6?
Just revealed by Yamaha Europe, a new 3-cylinder engine design based on the R1's crossplane crankshaft design. Will this be similar to Triumph's 675? Yamaha is claiming this is the future direction of their engine development by combining the best of twin and 4-cylinder machines. Talk about "clean" torque and improved efficiency within the motor are big selling points of it. How will it compare to the long-successful R6 platform? Read more here.

Very interesting. Looks like an exercise for manufacturing a more cost effective motorcycle. Look at how lightweight the Triumph 675 is – less weight in all components = less cost and better fuel economy. The 3 cylinders bikes are street bikes first. Fewer cylinders means lower sound levels. Down side will be the race tuning development curve – very costly for privateers. If the cross plane design allows for high rpm – it may be effective.
I think the 2014 Yamaha R6 will be quite interesting and new … :)
