Windham Acres 2012 Fall-Often Classic
We had our second "official" Windham Acres event this past weekend – dubbed the "Fall-Often Classic". The weather wasn't on our side, but it didn't matter as nearly everyone invited turned out for the event; even more than we had the first time. It rained nearly all day, so everyone got muddy, but when you're ready for those kind of conditions, somehow they aren't as bad. Matt's job as returning Champion was to somehow improve the trophy from last time and he did exactly that.
We changed up the format a little, running knock-out Superpole in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, with the overall winner between the two being crowned champion. Long-time racers Jim Cottrell, Darren Womack and Mark Gonyou were there (Mark having the most dirt experience of all of us), along with Ollie, Devin, Cristy, and Nick Van Goor (new to the Acres, but also with a lot of dirt experience). Of course dad and my brother Matt were there, and the STG guys/gals came out as well (Burry, Phil, Alf, Nick and Aubrey) to ride. Doug and M were there and ready to bring their TTR 125, but Doug didn't quite want to test out his back in case he might (likely, for most of us) fall and land wrong. Good call Doug.
Matt ended up winning and taking home the trophy – for a second straight time! Us "racers" couldn't believe it. He outrode everyone and won it fair and square, which is the beauty of Superpole. He edged me out going clockwise by .02 seconds in the final round of Superpole. .02! We used World Superbike point scoring, which gave Matt a little cushion going into the second half of the day, where he didn't make the final round going counter-clockwise, finishing 5th which was enough to win the overall title. I finished second overall, one point behind. Mark crashed going CW to take himself out of the running early on, but he came back to win the CCW Superpole in convincing fashion. Ollie was in the top 3-4 all day and NVG learned the track pretty quickly and was challenging the fast times before long. A couple of the guys who don't have their own XR100, are talking about getting one for our next event which is pretty cool.
The track conditions were sketchy before long, muddy and slippery everywhere and getting progressively worse throughout the day. However I think that provided a level playing field as the range of lap-times were all pretty close. Overall, we had a really good group of people out and I had a blast – and can't wait to do it again.
