A Wet and Oiled BeaveRun
Dave, Eric (Johnston) and his wife Michelle and I made the trip to BeaveRun this past weekend, along with Tom (Rubin) and his girlfriend Jen. The weather was looking sketchy for Saturday, but we thought we could get some good racing in on Sunday. For some reason, this event wasn't on the North Central schedule, but we liked the track and wanted to ride there again. We only ran BeaveRun once this year, unlike in the past where we've ran it a couple times.
We arrived Friday night and Eric and Michelle were nice enough to let me crash in their RV – a much better option than in the back of my Jeep, especially with it raining non-stop from about 9:30pm that night until 10am Saturday morning. It continued to rain on and off for the rest of the day and the track condition further improved when a bike severely oiled the track between BeaveRun's turn 6 and 7. The bike laid there long enough to most likely empty every bit of oil that was in the bike, which was great. That was roughly when we decided to head out and catch a movie. We later ate at a good Italian place just down the road from the track; then watched Old School on DVD, and off to sleep for Sunday's races.
Sunday morning was a bit sketchy as well. It rained early on, contrary to the weather forecast (who would have guessed?) Adding to the fun was that the oil spill was still an issue and WERA officials had to cone off part of the track, making the transition between T6 and T7 a one lane affair, with a no passing rule in effect for the entire day. When cones didn't work (someone knocked a cone down, followed by another rider then riding through the oil and crashing), WERA added a haybale to further point out the only raceable line – not exactly a great situation when Dave and I were there riding to improve our own laptimes.
In any event, the track dried up enough to race on. I dropped a second off my best laptime from earlier in the year, which wasn't bad considering the conditions. Dave did really well, winning two close races right at the checkered flag.
I'd like to thank Eric and Michelle again for letting me crash in their RV over the course of the weekend. Cramped up in the back of the Jeep for a wet and muddy couple of days wouldn't have been nearly as much fun as their spacious RV was. It was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone, even amidst the crappy weather. I'd still like to go back to BeaveRun one more time before the year's over to get in some more laps and go quicker.
Mid Ohio's next in a couple of weeks ..
