Windham Acres Summer Shandy Invitational

We had our third official "event" at Windham Acres this past weekend – the Summer Shandy Invitational. With 18 riders lined up for Superpole – all on little XR100's or TTR125's, it was pretty funny. Grown men and women riding little bikes is always entertaining. This was our biggest group yet and I had a blast – even if I didn't win. :)

It's all fun and games of course until there's timing involved – then it gets a little more serious. With a range of racers from multiple disciplines, these little bikes get pushed pretty hard. It starts with open practice for everyone, then a series of knock-out Superpole rounds to determine an overall winner and Champion. After running the track/Superpole in both directions, the overall Champion was Justin Fleming – a long time motorcycle rider/racer, but first timer to the event. He took home the prestigious Windham Acres trophy and won a pair of Knox dirt gloves in the process. The rest of us had to settle for the after-party with Summer Shandy's and a slew of bench racing/trash talk before the next event in a couple months – the Fall-Often Invitational. The way we do it – the trophy has to be "improved upon" for the next event, where it'll be passed on to whoever wins that one.

There are some additional photos over to the right in the Flickr feed my brother took which show some of the track prep involved, along with the official timing board. Preparations have become a little more time-intensive as the track has evolved, but the track has some nice character to it – although the photos don't do it justice. Now if only we could rent that Bobcat for next time ..

This weekend we're heading to Grattan Raceway for rounds four and five on the WERA schedule. It's a double header event, so we'll be plenty busy racing both days. Last year at Grattan, I didn't get to turn many race laps (see last year's race report if you're bored), so I'm hoping to finally get Grattan dialed in, going in the clockwise direction – always a tall challenge. Wish us luck!
