A Third Wrist Surgery
The latest news on the wrist isn't ideal. The above photo shows the x-ray right after the previous surgery, along with the most recent x-ray taken a couple weeks ago. As you can see, the screws are backing out. Dr. Chao says this is due to the new (donor) bone not growing/bonding with my existing bone, as it should be. The results are the screws not staying in place, along with added swelling and discomfort.
The solution is another surgery – taking bone from my hip this time and putting it partially in place of the new bone, and re-drilling new screws in place to hold it. It sounds like a much less-invasive/advanced surgery than the bone transplant surgery, but still an uncomfortable process nonetheless. Supposedly the hip hurts worse than the wrist, which is almost welcome news after the last procedure.
In any event, Gina is currently looking at flights and we're planning on scheduling the surgery in January or early February out in San Diego again, which would be about a year to-date from the previous surgery.
I've got to believe third time will be a charm. It has to be ..
